Wooden Boat Building Ep. 22: Mast Construction
Переглядів 34 тис.2 роки тому
Laminating the mast makes it stronger and more rigid. Sealing it with a few coats of epoxy protects the wood from exchanging moisture with the environment. Thanks to my neighbor, I could use his hydraulic cramping press to secure the 3mm steel shrouds. Here I am also hoisting the headsail for the first time. Thank you Supreme Sails for custom cutting them: www.supreme.si/
Ep. 21: Maiden Voyage, solo Survival challenge on the Danube
Переглядів 12 тис.2 роки тому
Before starting work on the rigging, I decided to take my home-built sailing dinghy out on the water. Her very first sail took place on the wild Danube during the second week of September 2021, without water or food but with plenty of gear. I have filtered and boiled river water for drinking and only ate fish once a day. I could not find worms because the river banks were completely covered wit...
Wooden Boat Building Ep. 20: Fitting her out
Переглядів 47 тис.2 роки тому
The very last arrangements for the Danube passage are maid plus most of the fittings attached. Thumbs up for the Sikaflex 291i that is both a sealant and also a bonding agent Some of the paintjobs were not filed due to the very limited time window. I used a polyurethane paint from a local supplier, so far I am very happy with it!
Wooden Boat Building Ep. 19: Gluing Sanding Finishing Painting
Переглядів 117 тис.3 роки тому
In this video you will see the progress of the past year. I have glued the decks, finished some of the smaller projects, finalized my first stainless steel welding job and many more :) I now prepare the boat and get her ready for her first sail, on the Danube...
Wooden Boat Building Ep. 18: DIY Stainless Steel Chain plates
Переглядів 12 тис.3 роки тому
In this episode, I am installing the chainplates to the boat. I have cut them from a 40x4mm stainless steel strip and polished them to look nice. They will support the mast by holding the shrouds tight. The boat I am building is called Kingfisher 14 and it's designed by Selway Fisher: www.selway-fisher.com/GPDinghy...
Wooden Boat Building Ep. 17: Adding Structure
Переглядів 24 тис.3 роки тому
One of the most trickiest parts of the boat building was the assembly of the inner structure: thwart knees supporting the bench, the angled beam and the deck beams. I used ash as hardwood for the knees, bench and the mast support. All beams are softwood. This is a series of movies illustrating the stitch and glue boat building technique. I have chosen the sailing Dinghy Kingfisher 14 designed b...

Wooden Boat Building Ep. 16: Installing the Skeg
Переглядів 27 тис.4 роки тому
I turned the boat upside down. it became heavy! Before moving to the sanding and fairing job I had to install the skeg. It needs to be sturdy because it will take some of the boat weight when not in water. Wooden Boat Building Ep. 15: How to move the Boat
Переглядів 28 тис.4 роки тому
Moving the boat around when single handed can be a challenge so I build this cart in order to make the movement easy and fun. Keep watching to see the built of the Kingfisher 14 plywood sailing dinghy!
Wooden Boat Building Ep. 14: Steam Bending Wood
Переглядів 25 тис.4 роки тому
We had great fun building this wood bending contraption. I am pretty sure the end-result could have been pretty much similar even without the steam but I learned a lot: need more steam, need better enclosed chamber, need better pot with no steam escaping. Keep watching to see the built of the Kingfisher 14 plywood sailing dinghy!
Wooden Boat Building episode 13: Lofting Boat Shapes
Переглядів 64 тис.5 років тому
Lofting inner parts of the boat shape or even beam curvature is sometimes a trial and error adventure. With this simple way, you can always get the right shape first time while enjoying the process of wooden boat building. Keep watching to see the built of the Kingfisher 14 plywood sailing dinghy!
Wooden Boat Building Step 12: Fiberglassing the Hull
Переглядів 71 тис.5 років тому
In this video I am fiberglassing the boat hull with 8oz/220g mat and using slow curing epoxy resin. I have laminated 2 layers at once and applied 3 additional coats of resin over more than 2 days. Garage temperature 19-20 degrees C. ideally above 22. Keep watching to see the built of the Kingfisher 14 plywood sailing dinghy!

What kind of epoxy did you use? And also did you have to wipe off the amine blush prior to epoxying back over the sections you epoxied between the zip ties?

    • @wulkie
      @wulkie 2 дні тому

I used a locally sources epoxy from europe, called epiphen. The sections between ZIP ties I glued în place with thickened epoxy. În my case, I used fine wood dust but there are a wide varieties of epoxy fillers. 2nd layer of epoxy is best to be applied where possible on uncured 1st layer for chemical bond. If 1st layer fully cures, you have to sand it before next layer so you get a mechanical bond. Hope this helps

You only need plywood frames and curv a single piece hull plywood for the bottom instead cutting the hull plywood in pieces

Quitting smoking was definitely a battle in addiction. Then quiting vaping was just as hard to stop if not harder. Nicotine a hard core drug addiction. Only just coming out even the safe vape juices arent safe for your lungs. Common sense tells us sucking anything artificial into your lung probably not a good thing. Quitting , and freedom of nicotine addiction is the only hesltjy option. Dont let the marketing and addicts fool us

Looking for some advice on repairing a broken sailboat mast. I need to patch on about a 4' piece on the bottom. The mast is constructed with spruce using the bird's mouth method. I think some kind of scarf joint would be the strongest, but I'm not sure how to do it for this application. Thoughts? Cheers and thanks in advance!!

Nice work and video. What epoxy did you use. You said slow cure but different brands behave differently and cure to slightly different stiffness too. I’m not experienced but I know to respect the dark art of epoxy. You avoid bubbles so well. Would really like to know more. Thanks. Oh. And another aspect. You were doing it from a very small portion in a container. But seemed to get the next small batch going really quickly. How did you do that? Was there a dispenser that actually worked or did you have a cool little process that streamlined portioning and mixing?

    • @wulkie
      @wulkie Рік тому

Thank you sir! I had very good result with a locally sourced resin. It might be produced in the EU. Epiphen RE 4020 with DE 4020 hardener. But any decent quality resin would work...

@@wulkie thanks for the incredibly prompt reply. I have used Mass epoxy in the past. I liked it but not experienced enough to say anything about it really. Don’t want to make those mistakes though as so much work builds up to the epoxy stage. Did you just measure it with pouring from the containers! Possibly not spending a full 2 min mixing slowly!?

Hello very goo job. Is this marine plywood or normal plywood?

    • @wulkie

Only marine plywood for boats! Reason is the glue used for lamination. You can keep marine plywood submerged in water for weeks without damage

Beautifull Build Captain that Plastic Paint Tray for the little Roller looked like a Accident waiting to happen i’ve used a lot of those mini Rollers myself and i prefer a Plastic Full. sized Roller Pans with those flimsy plastic throwaway liners that allow me to safely move the paint Tray around my decks without fearing the whole thing is going to bend in half and spill every drop often i will Paint or Varnish my 30 footer Woody while Standing either in a Dinghy or a Floating Dock so i need to concentrate on working those lines and balancing the thing i’m using when the Paint Tray can be safely moved around with one hand it makes things easier FYI it tends to make me conserve materials using the bigger sized pans because you have a bigger area to thin out the Roller Pads ! i really like that with my pricier Varnishes and other Finishes as well as having a little extra Control on multiple coat applications for myself when the weather oppurtunity hits and i get in the Mood i might do 15 plus coats on a 2 Day Weekend as i have been doing Marine WorknOff and On for over 40 years and it’s kind of Therapeutic and Enjoyable to do ! FYI i’m a retired Professional Woodworker !
